Colorado Wildland Fire & Incident Management Academy


NOMINATIONS DUE BY ARIL 15, 2008. First come, first served does not apply to the nominations. Selections will be based on Region 2 priority (including CO Fire Depts). The selection process will take a minimum of 2 weeks. Confirmation letters will be sent in late April to all those selected. Applicants not chosen will get a waiting list letter or email.

CGT3
Type 3 Command & General Staff Workshop (Non-NWCG)
This course is intended for potential and qualified Type III Incident Commanders. The course will cover the information needed for effective management of Type III incidents; organizational skills; agreements with local, state and federal agencies; incident business requirements; and informational transfer and transitioning with Type I and Type II teams. Prerequisite: Division supervisor or company officer qualified. - check schedule

Basic ICS: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
This course introduces students to principles of the Incident Command System (ICS) associated with incident-related performance. Topics include: Leadership and management, delegation of authority and management by objectives, functional areas and positions, briefings, organizational flexibility, transitions and transfers. This course is National Incident Management System (NIMS) compliant. Prerequisites: None. - check schedule

I-400
Advanced ICS: ICS for Command & General Staff and Complex Incidents
This course is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently in the advanced application of the environment. Topics covered in this course include fundamentals review for Command and General Staff, major and/or complex incident/event management, area command, and multi-agency coordination. This course is National Incident Management System (NIMS) compliant. Prerequisite: I-300. - check schedule

Human Factors on the Fireline
This training course is designed for unit-level supervisors to use when delivering orientation training to new crew members. The stand alone training package is available in the NWCG Publication Management System. An adapted version will be included as Unit 4 in the 2003 edition of S-130, Basic Firefighter. Presentation of the course involves a few short lecture segments, but the primary content is delivered by video and supported with small group exercises. Topic areas include: situation awareness, basic communication responsibilities, attitude & stress barriers, decision making process and teamwork principles. Prerequisite: None. - check schedule

M & C
Maps & Compass Course
This course provides the student with a basic level of knowledge and skills associated to land navigation with a map and compass. In addition, the use of GPS as a navigational supplement to maps and compass will be discussed. The orienteering course field exercise will provide students with the opportunity to practice skills and utilize classroom exercises. Prerequisites: None. - check schedule

STEX
Design and delivery of Tactical Decision Games & Sand Table Exercises
The intent of this class is to assist facilitators in the design and delivery of Tactical Decision Games (TDGS) and Sand Table Exercises (STEX). The first part of the class will focus on the design of specific exercises, while the second part focuses on delivery techniques that will enhance the sucees and effectiveness of the exercises. TDGS/ STEX properly designed and delivered will allow firefighters on your unit to practice situational assessment, to consider and select courses of action and to practice communicatiing those decisions. check schedule

S-200 
Initial Attack Incident Commander
This course is designed to provide the individual in charge of small initial attack fires; the training needed to size-up, deploy forces, suppression, mop-up, communications and administrative duties. Prerequisite: Single Resource Boss (quals) - check schedule

S-212 
Wildfire Powersaws
This class is designed to train students in the proper use of chainsaws and techniques necessary to prepare them for their functional role as a chainsaw operator on an incident. Class A certification is now available with this 5 day class & field. Prerequisites: Qualified as FFT2 and current certification in Basic First Aid & CPR. check schedule

S-230 
Crew Boss (Single Resource Boss)
This course is designed to meet the training needs of a crew boss on an incident. Units include preparation, mobilization, tactics & safety, off line duties, demobilization and post incident responsibilities. FFT1 (quals), S-131 & S-290 are the prerequisites. check schedule

S-231 
Engine Boss (Single Resource Boss)
This course provides single resource boss training relevant to the engine boss position. Units covered include: identifying crew and engine capabilities; gathering information for assignments; communicating and coordinating effectively with crew members; tactics and safety. Prerequisites include FFT1 (quals) and S-230. check schedule

S-244 
Field Observer
This course provides the student with the skills necessary to perform as a field observer (FOBS) and/or a fire effects monitor (FEMO). Topics include: roles and responsibilities of the FOBS and FEMO; how to make observations and document those observations; how to produce hand drawn and GPS field maps; and how to navigate using a compass and GPS. The navigation unit has 4½ hours of field exercises and the final field exercise is 8 hours. Prerequisites: Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290). Basic understanding of how
to use a GPS receiver. FOBS: Qualified as any single resource boss OR FEMO: Qualified as a firefighter type 2 (FFT2)

S-270 
Basic Air Operations
This course offers information on the uses of aircraft in fire suppression and provides instruction on how to conduct oneself in and around aircraft. It will familiarize the trainee with tactical and logistical uses of aircraft in fire suppression, as well as, describe the specifications for helicopter landing areas. Prerequisite: None. check schedule

S-330 
Task Force/ Strike Team Leader
This course meets the training requirements for the positions of Task Force and Strike Team Leader. The course is designed to be interactive with several scenarios and exercises specific to wildland fire suppression. Prerequisites: Qualified as any single resource boss.check schedule

S-339
Division/Group Supervisor
This course prepares the student to perform in the role of division/group supervisor. It will provide instruction in support of the specific tasks of division/group supervisor or in the incident command system (ICS), both of which the student should learn through prerequisite course work. Topics include include: division/group management, organizational interaction and division operations. Prerequisite: Qualified as a task force leader (TFLD) or qualified as an incident commander type 3 (ICT3). - check schedule

S-340 (2006 Edition)
Human Resources Specialist
This course is designed to equip an individual with the technical skills and knowledge needed to fulfill the role of Human Resource Specialist (HRSP) on emergency incidents. The primary purpose of the HRSP is to assist the Incident Command Team in maintaining a harmonious and professional environment by facilitating the resolution of a wide range of human resource issues. Prerequisites: I-100 & S-110.- check schedule

TEOC
IMT to EOC: An Advance Team Perspective
The goal of this workshop is to provide state and local emergency management officials with the knowledge and skills they need to operate an Emergency Operating Center (EOC) and interface it with an Incident Command System (ICS) field operation or Incident Management Team in the field. The workshop provides an opportunity for participants to begin developing an ICS/EOC interaction for their community. The workshop reviews ICS and EOC responsibilities and functions and depends heavily on a final exercise and group discussions. The workshop also explores advanced features of dealing with type III, II and I incidents from a multi agency (MACC)/EOC perspective. Target Audience: State and local personnel responsible for developing, staffing, managing and operating an EOC and coordinating EOC operations with a field command post. Prerequisites: Completion of ICS independent study course IS-100 & 200 is desirable. - check schedule

  FI-210
Fire Investigation Training
This course is designed to prepare an individual for basic fire investigation responsibilities in the area of origin and cause determination. Students successfully completing this course will receive full credit for FI-210 as required by NWCG certification standards. Prerequisites: Law Enforcement Officer or 1 year experience as a firefighter. - check schedule

HRSP Refresher
Human Resources Specialist Refresher
This is a 2-day refresher course to stay current. A Ttri-annual refresher is required to perform as a Human Resource Specialist (HRSP). It will include an update on all new policies and procedures involved in the HRSP program. Prerequisites: None. - check schedule

I-300
Intermediate ICS: ICS for Supervisors & Expanding Incidents
This course is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently using the Incident Command System (ICS) in supervisory roles on expanding or Type 3 incidents. Topics include: ICS fundamentals review, incident/event assessment and agency guidance in establishing incident objectives, Unified Command, incident resources management, planning process, demobilization and incident transfer of command or close out. This course is National Incident Management System (NIMS) compliant. Prerequisite: I-200. - check schedule

National Incident Management System (NIMS) and National Response Plan (NRP)
IS-700 course introduces NIMS. It explains the
purpose, principles, key components and benefits
of NIMS. The course also contains “Planning
Activity” screens giving you an opportunity to
complete some planning tasks during this course.
The planning activity screens are printable so
that you can use them after you complete the

L-280
Followership to Leadership
This training is designed as a self-assessment opportunity for individuals preparing to step into a leadership role. The course combines one day of classroom instruction followed by a second day in the field with students working through a series of problem solving events in small teams.  Topics include: leadership values and principles; transition challenges for new leaders; situational leadership; team cohesion factors; ethical decision-making. Prerequisites: L-180 & experience on incident assignments in operations or support functions. - check schedule

ROSS
Resource Ordering Statusing System
This course is designed to introduce the student to the Resource Ordering and Statusing System (ROSS). It includes both lecture and hands on with computers. Students will be maneuvering in the ROSS program utilizing exercises that simulate actual dispatch ordering. Students will utilize the most recent version of ROSS. Prerequisites: D-110.. check schedule

S-130/190
Basic Fire fighting & Wildfire Behavior
This is an entry-level course to assist in the understanding of fire behavior, safety, and effective control of wildland fires. Valuable experience is gained in the field exercises. This course includes an overnight spike camp. Includes L-180. No prerequisites required, however this course is required to receive your red card.- check schedule.

S-131 
Advanced Firefighter Training
This new course is designed for the Advanced Firefighter and Squad Boss to include tactics and safety. It is an interactive course, facilitated by group exercises. Prerequisite: S130/S190. - check schedule

S-211
Portable Pumps & Water Use

This course is designed to give the student practical knowledge and application skills of portable pump operations. Field exercises will train students in the setup and operation of a portable pump along with foam applications. Presentation to include the pros and cons of retardant use.. Prerequisites: None - check schedule

S-215
Fire Operations in the Urban Interface
This course is designed to assist initial attack incident commanders and company officers in confronting wildland fires that threaten life, property and improvements. Prerequisite: Agency folks should be Single Resource Boss qualified and structure fire departments must complete courses: S-130/190, S-230, S-231 & I-200. - check schedule

S-234 
Ignition Operations
This course is designed to train the single resource
boss in the functional roles and responsibilities associated with planning and managing an ignition operation. The course will cover planning for the burning operation, ignition techniques, firing devices and vegetative fuel types. If weather permits, a field exercise and/or prescribed fire will
be included. The burn exercise is not mandatory
for this course. We offer it to provide experience
but due to winter weather conditions the live burn could be cancelled. Prerequisites: S-290 & FFT2 qualified. - check schedule

S-260 
Incident Business Management
Discusses business management principles associated with incidents. This course includes: employee responsibilities and conduct; recruitment; personnel time recording; pay and commissary; correct reporting procedures for traumatic injuries/ occupational diseases; procurement and equipment time recording; property documentation; cooperative agreements with other agencies; and claims/ accident investigations. Prerequisites: None. - check schedule

S-290
Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior
This skills course is designed to instruct prospective fire line supervisors in wildland fire behavior to make safe and effective fire management operations. Prerequisite: S130/S190.  - check schedule

S-300 
Extended Attack Incident Commander
The intent of this course is to present the knowledge necessary to perform as a Type 3 Incident Commander and to provide opportunities to practice the execution of that knowledge. Prerequisites: ICT4 & Task Force Single Resource Boss Leader qualified or qualified in any two SRB positions. - check schedule

S-336
Tactical Decision Making in Wildland Fire
The course is designed to support training requirements in the Operations Section of the Incident Command System. It is designed primarily to instruct experienced single resource bosses and initial attack incident commanders in the tactics necessary at the strike team/task force leader level. It is also valuable for operations supervisors qualified at higher management levels who have not received training in wildfire suppression tactics. Lecture and exercises in this package are specific to wildland fire suppression, and extensively build upons students' position experience and prerequisite training. Prerequisite: Single resource boss or ICT4.- check schedule

Information Officer
This course meets the training requirements for an public information officer type 2 (PIO2). Topics include: information organization and assignment, developing a communications strategy, information operations, creating a safe environment, effective media relations, incident within an incident, community relations analysis, documentation, demobilization, and transitioning. Students will identify and describe the policies and procedures necessary to effectively serve as public information officer type 2 (PIO2) on a type 2 incident. Prerequisites: Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190).- check schedule

WFSA
Wildland Fire Situation Analysis
The Wildland Fire Situation Analysis is prepared electronically and approved by a line officer. This course teaches the logic and mechanics of preparing a WFSA to select the correct alternative of suppressing a wildfire. It also includes updates on the changes the WFSA continues to undergo.
